Winemaker Notes

Reddish-purple in color. This wine is very aromatic black cherry, black raspberry, and pomegranate, mixed with hints of cassis, chocolate, and slight peppery spice. Lush , lively texture with lovely black cherry and pomegranate fruit, bright acidity to balance the sweet fruit flavors, black pepper and clove spice, and a long, lively finish of black cherry, raspberry, and hints of cocoa powder.

Professional Ratings

  • 93

Rich garnet color, spice nose, snappy, rich and showing blackberry and cherry fruit, a perfect balance between deep, ripe flavors and lovely acid structure; a complete package, long and stunning.

  • 92

This seductive wine shows a lot of polish and nuanced oak spices for a Zinfandel, as cinnamon, cedar and vanilla mingle with deep, dark-blackberry and black-currant flavors. Blended from various Northern California vineyards, it’s laced with fine-grained tannins and will certainly improve through at least 2025.

Opens with a burst of jammy blackberry fruit and takes on tension and structure, along with toasty sage and pepper, toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2027.

Dashe Cellars, California
Dashe Cellars Winery Image

Dashe Cellars, founded in 1996, blends Anne's classic French winemaking training with the experience Michael has gained at Ridge Vineyards, Far Niente and Chateau Lafite-Rothschild. Together, the Dashes' strive to create authentic, site-focused wines that capture the charm and personality of top, independent vineyards throughout Sonoma County and beyond. In 2007, Michael and Anne started a new series of wines that they dubbed "Les Enfants Terribles", wines that were inspired by many of the French wines they admire, with balance, complexity, lower alcohols, beautiful fruit aromatics and velvety textures. These easy-to drink and expressive wines are a great complement to their lineup of classic "signature wines".

California is a winemaking colossus; by itself it is the fourth largest producer in the world. Red wine accounts for 56% of the total by volume, and red grapes 63% of total acres planted. In addition, a number of California red wines are heralded as being among the most prestigious and sought-after wines in the world.

While the state’s incredibly diverse geography, soils and microclimates allow for a wide array of styles, the key factor unifying California red wine is the abundance of sunshine and a long, consistent growing season. This leads to well-developed fruit marked both by impressive ripeness and balancing acidity.

The state’s most famous red wine region, of course, is Napa Valley, where Cabernet Sauvignon reigns as king. But California boasts a wealth of other impressive appellations. The much larger and climatically varied Sonoma County also produces world class California Cabernet, along with wonderful examples of California Pinot Noir and Zinfandel.

Fine versions of Cabernet and Zinfandel hail from Paso Robles as well, which is also gaining fame with Rhone varietals like Syrah and Grenache. As for Pinot Noir, terrific examples can be found from AVA’s such as Anderson Valley, Carneros, Santa Lucia Highlands and Sta. Rita Hills. Wineries in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties are making wonderful Syrahs, and the Sierra Foothill appellations are proving to be an experimental hotbed, with Italian and Spanish varietals employed to great effect.

This of course is a mere sketch. The subject of California red wine is as deep and broad as an ocean, and absolutely a joy to explore!
