Winemaker Notes

The 2009 Maya is so densely structured, textured, and colored, that an assessment of it today provides only a glimpse of what the wine will become over time. This blend of Cabernet Franc (35%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (65%) is indeed very expressive, jumpy like a young racehorse in the starting gate. Lively aromas of cherry cordial, baked blackberries, mocha, and coconut are highlighted by earth tones, such as crushed stones, flint, and freshly dug earth. The wine has a tight muscularity, and a cooling acidity that brings all these flavors to the foreground. As it sits in the glass, more layers of dark roast coffee, earth, and ripe black fruits are revealed, but its density and opacity speak to the fact that this wine will not reach its full potential for many years, and will likely live strong for several decades.

The 2009 Maya Proprietary Red Wine displays a deep garnet-purple color, exploding with notes of rose hip tea, dried lavender and candied violets over a core of raspberry preserves, blackberry pie and redcurrant jelly plus suggestions of spice cake, tobacco and forest floor. Full-bodied, concentrated and boldly fruited, the palate is beautifully lifted with racy freshness and supported with a very fine-grained frame, finishing long and incredibly poised.

Gustav passed away in 1995 and Naoko Dalla Valle continues the legacy of Dalla Valle wines. Dalla Valle Vineyards produces three wines: Maya (55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Cabernet Franc), Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Pietre Rosse (100% Sangiovese).

Home to some of the most sought-after Cabernet Sauvignon in America, Napa Valley’s Oakville district stretches across the center of Napa's valley floor and foothills between the Vaca and Mayacamas Mountains. Oakville's diverse soils, namely ancient sea bedrock, clay and gravel, are well-drained, and perfect for high-caliber viticulture.

Cabernet here is often bottled varietally but is also popular in Bordeaux Blends. Oakville wines are known for their silky, sensual textures, structured tannins, dark and brooding fruit and lovely aromatics. These age-worthy and prestigious wines are favored by collectors throughout the world.
