Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The 2019 Chardonnay expresses delicate aromas of apple, citrus blossom and crème brûlée. On the palate, the creaminess is balanced by an exuberant minerality and freshness that creates a perfect tension in this wine. The luxurious texture is complemented by flavors of honeydew melon, star fruit and a persistent saline finish that reflects the vineyard’s proximity to the sea.

Professional Ratings

The 2019 Chardonnay Dakél Viñedo Maricerro comes from the Itata coast, 12 miles from the sea. Fallen leaf yellow in hue. The nose contains aromas from the aging process, such as cigar box and nutmeg, along with white fruit and green apple notes, a hint of creamed corn and a yeasty backdrop. In the mouth it has a lot of flavor, a terse feel and freshness wrapped in an oaky coating. Classical and extremely long-lasting, this is an accomplished, cosmopolitan white.

With a subtle nose of camomile, white peach and wet stones, this is smooth and creamy with bright acidity. Delicate, nuanced, with just a hint of saline minerality on the long finish. Smart stuff.
  • 91
With attractive aromas of honey, white flowers and lime, this medium-bodied and complex white displays a mineral texture that carries bright flavors of apple and white peach accented by honey. The finish starts out with a hint of sweetness followed by delicious lime and saline notes.
  • 91
Peach pits, apricots, butter, milk and broad beans on the nose. Full-bodied with a round, creamy and leesy palate, with lingering yoghurt and milk character.
  • 90

Opens with apple blossom and mineral notes, which are underscored by a crème fraîche cast to the melon and Asian pear core. The finish is driven by vibrant mineral acidity.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.
