Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Delightful combination of fresh-cut grass, spicy and vanillin oak aromas supported by tropical notes. The palate shows vibrant fruit lifted by citrus notes. Very complex already with lovely stone fruit nuances and toasty characteristics. Barrel fermentation is seamless and playing second role. A brilliant example of this classic blend.

The 2015 Ephraim Clarke Sauvignon Blanc Semillon is close to a 3:1 ratio of Sauvignon Blanc to Sémillon. Partially barrel-fermented and aged, it shows hints of toast and lemon curd on the nose and palate, a delicate feel on the medium-bodied palate and a long, silky finish tinged with vanilla.

Intense, with bold, up-front notes of coconut custard and honeysuckle that melt into more subtle flavors of peach and grapefruit. A spicy thread picks up momentum on the juicy finish. Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon.

Cullen Cullen Vineyard Winery Image

A founding winery of Margaret River, Cullen was established in 1971 by pioneering winemakers Kevin and Diana Cullen. In redefining the style of Australian Cabernet Sauvignon produced in the 1970s, the fledgling estate caught the attention of the nation. Since then, an unrelenting commitment to quality, integrity and sustainability has positioned Cullen as one of Australia's greatest estates - and Margaret River as one of the nation's premier wine-producing regions. The mature, biodynamically farmed vineyard produces elegant, age-worthy wines that draw world-wide critical acclaim, including what is regarded by many as the country's definitive Bordeaux blend.

Sometimes light and crisp, other times rich and creamy, Bordeaux White Blends typically consist of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Often, a small amount of Muscadelle or Sauvignon Gris is included for added intrigue. Popularized in Bordeaux, the blend is often mimicked throughout the New World. Somm Secret—Sauternes and Barsac are usually reserved for dessert, but they can be served before, during or after a meal. Try these sweet wines as an aperitif with jamón ibérico, oysters with a spicy mignonette or during dinner alongside hearty Alsatian sausage.

Home to some of Australia’s most elegant and long-lived red and white wines, Margaret River is situated in the farthest reaches of Western Australia. Relatively warm and dry, the region is cooled by breezes from the Indian Ocean. Margaret River takes some inspiration from Bordeaux, producing top-quality Cabernet Sauvignons and Bordeaux Blends with firm structure, mouthwatering acidity, balanced alcohol and notes of herbs and spice. For white wines, refreshing blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon as well as complex, age-worthy Chardonnays are regional specialties.
