Winemaker Notes

Solomon Lot 70 Cabernet Sauvignon is phenomenally lush, supple-textured and loaded with ripe, black fruit and spice flavors. Dark, black fruit is at the fore, couched in continued and long-lasting layers of excellence.

Professional Ratings

  • 94

A best-barrel selection of approximately 200 cases, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Solomon Lot 70 is less herbal than the regular bottling, but it still has an attractive lift to its notes of dark cherries and cassis, plus hints of vanilla and cedar (it aged in 75% new French oak). It's medium to full-bodied, not overdone but ripe and velvety, with a long, nicely textured finish that's dusty and fully dry but soft and appealing.

  • 92

Brooding and layered with ripe black fruits, dark chocolate, dried herbs and sticky tobacco, this generous wine is carried by plentiful tannins and an ultralong finish.

  • 92
A plush version, offering a wave of dark currant, plum and black cherry reduction notes lined with alder smoke and underscored by loam and licorice on the broad finish. For fans of the heady style. Best from 2025 through 2036. 125 cases made.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
