Winemaker Notes

The wine displays a garnet-red color and an elegant nose, with notes of rose and violet, red berries, grapefruit, and subtle hints of licorice. On the palate, it is linear, clean, and precise, supported by soft, silky tannins and a long, persistent finish.

This wine pairs beautifully with hearty dishes such as beef shank, roasted beef shoulder, or lamb.

This red is elegant and juicy, featuring black cherry, blackberry, tar, underbrush and iron flavors. Starts out supple, gaining tannins while playing out on the long aftertaste. Best from 2030 through 2047. 350 cases made, 88 cases imported.

The 2021 Coppo BAROLO del Comune di La Morra shows a faded brick color with orange edges, offering aromas of cedar chest and hints of clove that are both tantalizing and attractive; medium to full-bodied, it is firm yet compact on the palate, with serious dark fruit flavors underscored by a suggestion of oak, leading to a firm, structured finish—best enjoyed with a classic Piemontese dish such as braised beef in Barolo or tajarin with truffles, where the wine’s structure and depth can fully express themselves. Floral and spicy, this offers aromas of raspberries and cherries with hints of licorice, rose hips and moist soil. The palate is dry and zesty with medium body and tense, lightly chewy tannins. Juicy and a little fluid, yet it shows tension and focus. Drink or hold.

Dusty cherry and strawberry preserves mingle with warmed earth, ground ginger, and dried roses. The palate unfolds with preserved red berries, framed by chalky tannins and energetic acidity, leading to a savory finish. Elegant yet structured. Perfect with Mongolian lamb stir-fry or miso-glazed roasted portobellos with crispy shallots.

Responsible for some of the most elegant and age-worthy wines in the world, Nebbiolo, named for the ubiquitous autumnal fog (called nebbia in Italian), is the star variety of northern Italy’s Piedmont region. Grown throughout the area, as well as in the neighboring Valle d’Aosta and Valtellina, it reaches its highest potential in the Piedmontese villages of Barolo, Barbaresco and Roero. Outside of Italy, growers are still very much in the experimentation stage but some success has been achieved in parts of California. Somm Secret—If you’re new to Nebbiolo, start with a charming, wallet-friendly, early-drinking Langhe Nebbiolo or Nebbiolo d'Alba.
