    Winemaker Notes

Intense red with aromas of tobacco, vanilla and truffle. A smooth start leads to a surprising forcefulness on the palate. The wine exhibits an incredible synergy of alcohol, acidity and tannins characteristic of the village of Torremontalvo.

    Conde de Hervias, Spain

Conde de Hervías is a unique and specialized winery in northern Rioja Alta, where the focus is producing site expressive, terroir wines of the highest quality from historic vineyards in the village of Torremontalbo. Íñigo Manso de Zúñiga Ugartechea, together with his winemaking partner and wife Yolanda Garcúa Viadero, work highly prestigious plots of pre-phylloxera vines which surround their home in Torremontalbo, an incredible structure built in 1252. Íñigo studied Enology at the University of Bordeaux in France, where this training taught him to respect balance and restraint over power and concentration. Both he and Yolanda have spent a lifetime making wine in many diverse regions throughout Spain and apply the sum of their experience and passion to this small, artisan project. Their philosophy at Conde de Hervías currently translates to one of the most classically pure and elegant interpretations of Rioja, miles away from the mass-produced wines found in Haro.

Hailed as the star red variety in Spain’s most celebrated wine region, Tempranillo from Rioja, or simply labeled, “Rioja,” produces elegant wines with complex notes of red and black fruit, crushed rock, leather, toast and tobacco, whose best examples are fully capable of decades of improvement in the cellar.

Rioja wines are typically a blend of fruit from its three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental, although specific sub-region (zonas), village (municipios) and vineyard (viñedo singular) wines can now be labeled. Rioja Alta and Alavesa, at the highest elevations, are considered to be the source of the brightest, most elegant fruit, while grapes from the warmer and drier, Rioja Oriental, produce wines with deep color, great body and richness.
