Winemaker Notes

Composed of the top five red varieties used in Bordeaux, this medium-to-full bodied blend demonstrates complexity on the nose and palate. Aromas of candied red and black cherry are underscored by a bouquet of warm toasted oak, rich loam, and dried brush. The flavors show mocha and black fruit up front, baked ham and open-flame grilling in the middle, and a persistent finish of ripe fruit, sweet oak, and freshly-ground baking spices. It has a lush, pleasing mouthfeel with smooth texture, lively acidity and tannins that are dusty yet fine-grained.

Critical Acclaim

WE 90
Wine Enthusiast

A blend of the five major Bordeaux varieties, this is a deliciously soft wine. So easy to like for its rich blackberry, cherry, raspberry and smoky oak flavors, courtesy of 40% new barrels. Shows lots of class for the price. -Editor's Choice

Cinnabar
Situated 40 miles south of San Francisco between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, Cinnabar overlooks Silicon Valley from the east rim of the Santa Cruz Mountains at 1,650 feet. Mild temperatures and clay-loam soils contribute deep fruit and earthy components to wines that express a unique sense of place. Winemaker George Troquato combines Cinnabar's small, intensely flavored grapes with meddle-free winemaking to produce complex, well-balanced wines.

Responsible for the vast majority of American wine production, if California were a country, it would be the world’s fourth largest wine-producing nation. The state’s diverse terrain and microclimates allow for an incredibly wide-ranging selection of wine styles, and unlike tradition-bound Europe, experimentation is more than welcome here. Wineries range from boutique to massive corporations, and price and quality are equally varied—plenty of inexpensive bulk wine is made in the Central Coast area, while Napa is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious and expensive “cult” wines.

Just about every style of wine you can imagine is made in California, from bone dry to unctuously sweet, still to sparkling, light and fresh to rich and full-bodied. Each AVA and sub-AVA has its own distinct personality. In the Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and other Bordeaux varieties dominate, as well as Sauvignon Blanc. Sonoma County is best known for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Zinfandel. The Central Coast has carved out a niche with Rhône blends based on Grenache and Syrah, while Mendocino has found success with Alsatian varieties such as Riesling and Gewürztraminer. With all the diversity that California has to offer, it is certain that any wine lover will find something to get excited about.
