Winemaker Notes

The grapes for Chateau Souverain's Winemaker's Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon are grown on the hillsides and bench lands of Alexander Valley. These vineyards are noted for their gravelly, low-energy soil, which produces rich, concentrated flavors and colors. We chose Stuhlmuller, Chambers & Hansen and our own estate vineyards as the sources for this vintage. The terraced hillside of Stuhlmuller Vineyard (50%) historically is the backbone of our reserve blends due to its great fruit concentration. Chambers and Hansen vineyard, planted at about 2000 feet high above the northern rim of Alexander Valley, provided 27% of the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and all of the 9% of the Cabernet Franc. The remaining 14% are from the estate of Chateau Souverain.

Dark, with a solid ruby color and lots of rich, complex flavors. The core currant, plum, blackberry, fresh earth and cedar flavors are well-centered, and there's no shortage of tannins, though this one glides to the finish.

While Sonoma County is acclaimed—and rightfully so—for its Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Zinfandels, it also produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Of the region’s 18 American Viticultural Areas, only a handful produce top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon. These appellations include Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Sonoma Valley and Dry Creek Valley. Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignons made in these appellations can offer a complex array of aromas and flavors. Fruit notes such as blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, black cherry and raspberry often are accompanied by hints of graphite, dusty earth, cigar box, toast and vanilla. The varietal has a rich history in Sonoma, and some of these Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet-based blends rival the best from Napa Valley.
