Winemaker Notes

Flavors and aromas of jasmin, almond paste, tobacco, roasted bread, wild raspberry. The quality is everywhere in the serines of St Joseph: the beauty of the slopes, the quality of the granitic soils, the elegance of the wines, their ability to age. The outstanding character of the serine grape makes us go back to the ancient flavors, so interesting compared to the standardized syrah from our century.

WS 92
Wine Spectator
Plush, with espresso and cocoa powder notes framing the dark plum, crushed blackberry and warm fig sauce flavors. Long and velvety through the full-bodied finish. Drink now through 2016. 350 cases made.
RP 90
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The big 2009 St.-Joseph offers up scents of strawberry jam, black cherries, black currants, licorice, graphite and a touch of scorched earth. Very good, with outstanding concentration, purity and texture, it still has some tannin to shed, but it is accessible and should drink nicely for a decade or more.

Chateau de Saint Cosme is the leading estate of Gigondas and produces the appellation’s benchmark wines. Wine has been produced on the site of Saint Cosme since Roman times, evident by the ancient Gallo-Roman vats carved into the limestone below the chateau. The property has been in the hands of Louis Barruol’s family since 1570. Henri and Claude Barruol took over in 1957 and gradually moved Saint Cosme away from the bulk wine business. Henri was one of the first in the region to work organically beginning in the 1970s. Louis Barruol took over from his father in 1992, making a dramatic shift to quality, adding a négociant arm to the business in 1997, and converting to biodynamics in 2010.
