Winemaker Notes

The 2007 season began dry, about 60% of normal precipitation with some very cold days and single-digit nighttime temperatures around the New Year holiday. Temperatures were warmer than normal as winter continued into spring with resulting earlier budding, bloom and set in the vineyards across all varieties. The summer months continued on the mild to cool side, with few days topping 100 degrees. There was a brief period of heat that spiked around Labor Day, but the temperatures cooled after several days. This year clusters, as well as individual berries on the clusters – though set at a normal quantity – were notably smaller in all varieties due to the dry season.

Our Pinot Noir is fresh, vibrant and inviting with flavors of ripe cherry, clove spice and caramel. Notable silky textures and lingering finish provide elegant balance and finesse to this soft wine.

As early as the 1970s Carneros became known as a source of terrific Pinot Noir, and was one of the first California regions to gain such a reputation. The combination of sunny days, cooling fog and thin clay soils are tailor-made for the variety. Another factor in Pinot Noir’s prominent place here is vintners’ willingness to experiment widely. The history of the grape in Carneros is marked by continuous research into clonal variations, viticultural techniques and site selection. Careful evaluation over time has revealed a signature flavor profile as well. Complex aromas and flavors of cherry, red berry, spice, earth and cola appear time and again in Carneros Pinot Noir. To this day the appellation remains one of California’s standard bearers for the variety.
