Winemaker Notes

Bright gold colour. Intense aromas of exotic fruit (mango) mixed with yellow fleshed fruit (peach) underlined by mineral and iodine notes. Complex and broad shouldered. Beautiful freshness on a well-balanced structure. Elegant finish with beautiful mineral nuances.

This makes me think about the first pineapples that made it to Europe from the Caribbean during the 17th century, because it has a haunting nose of pineapple that's anything but simple. Although the fruit here is very ripe, the special vitality and firm mineral structure of this appellation lies behind it, becoming ever more prominent as the wine flows steadily over the palate. Although the finish is quite firm, it remains both subtle and precise. Drink or hold.

A lovely wine, with notes of green apple, ripe apricot and quince, coloured with floral and mineral accents. The texture is broad and deep, with a substantial heft to the wine, but enough freshness to balance the inherent richness. This half-hectare, single-block parcel of white Corton represents the northernmost vineyard of the domaine. A further 0.15ha of the stony soil has recently been replanted. The grapes are gently pressed and fermented in cask (one-quarter new).

This rich white has a buttery component accompanying the peach, lemon and oak spice flavors. Intense yet harmonious, and should really hit its stride in a year or two. Fine length. Best from 2024

Mostly planted in 2004, having switched from pinot. Their vines share the rocky outcrop with those of the Hospices de Beaune. 14.2% alcohol. Rich lemon color. The bouquet is quite punchy too. A faint touch of coconut from the oak, but it corresponds well. This is powerful but I think the terroir can carry it. Rocks in the sunshine come across in the flavor profile, but the grapes are in no way scorched. Pretty good length too, this is not for the faint hearted, though the terroir has ultimately managed to withstand the heat of the vintage.

Chanson Pere & Fils Winery Video

Founded in 1750, Chanson is one of the five grand "shippers" of Burgundy's Côte d'Or- an estate steeped in centuries-old tradition and rich in viticultural history. As a négociant (winemaker and merchant) and a domaine (vineyard estate), Chanson has represented the best of Burgundy for more than 250 years, growing its own grapes, partnering with other growers, bottling, selling, and shipping its own wines.

Chanson's holdings comprise some of Burgundy's most coveted vineyards. Located in the heart of the Côte de Beaune (the historical center of Burgundy) and surrounded by some of the greatest vineyards in the world, Chanson can count French philosophe Voltaire, romantic poet Lamartine, and the Bonaparte family among its clients.

Its celebrated bastion, a 15th-century fortress first rented and then acquired in 1794 to cellar the wines, is an internationally celebrated icon of Burgundy (the largest of six bastions that form part of the wall surrounding the city of Beaune).

To visit Chanson is to travel back in time and experience the magic of the 1000-year-old tradition of winemaking. Chanson still vinifies and cellars its wines in the bastion as it has for over 200 years. The 10-meter thick walls of this ancient fortress make it ideal for winemaking.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

Another charming village of the Côte de Beaune district of Burgundy’s Côte d’Or, Ladoix-Serrigny produces mainly Premier Cru Pinot Noir, but also some Chardonnay. Interestingly, some of the villages’ Premiers Crus vineyards overlap with nearby Aloxe-Corton.
