Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

A bountiful Chardonnay crop in 2005 was thinned to create balanced vines, and a cool growing season preserved fresh acidity and vibrant fruit character in the grapes. The resulting wine exhibits aromas of ripe stone fruit — apricot, peach and pear — along with tropical notes of deliciously ripe banana and pineapple. Brown spices such as clove, nutmeg and hazelnut frame the intense fruit. Lush and rich tropical flavors abound in its multi-textured and viscous palate.

Professional Ratings

  • 95
On the one hand dense, deep and very well-extracted, yet on other both bright and balanced, this generously fruited offering is rife with wonderfully well-fit elements of juicy apples, citrus, sweet toast and cream in its rich aromas and follows with full-scaled flavors of real complexity and depth. A touch viscous but alive and in very fine balance from front to back, it continues to unfold at the finish with long flavors of fruit, minerals, spice and rich oak. There is far more wine here than first meets the nose and palate, and its remarkable impressions of layering tied to its perfectly focused Chardonnay fruit move this exceptional effort convincingly to the head of the class.

Refreshing, intense, and vibrant, with a mix of spice, floral, fig and apricot flavors that are rich, deep and complex, ending with a long, persistent finish.

Chalk Hill Winery Winery Video

Perhaps no other winery captures the casual luxury of Sonoma County better than Chalk Hill Estate. Founded nearly four decades ago, this spectacular 1300-acre property features 300 acres of vineyards, wilderness areas, winery, hospitality center, culinary garden, residence, stables, equestrian pavilion, sports fields, fishing and swimming ponds, and guest houses.

The winery's vineyards are thoughtfully woven through the native foliage and contoured to fit the intricate terrain. More than two-thirds of the Chalk Hill Estate remains uncultivated. The higher elevations offer stunning views of the Russian River Valley to the west and the Mayacamas Mountains to the east.
