Winemaker Notes
The 2023 version of Capture Pine Mountain Sauvignon Blanc is mysterious. Thearomas are layered, bouncing between lime zest, lemon verbena, and some slate. Thearoma isn’t complete without the vineyard's trademark hint of savory mountain scrubbest described as soft chamomile or dried sage – this time with some added lychee. The palate is zippy! The natural acidity is extremely bright and framed by the variety’strademark fruit bouquet of fresh key lime, dried orange, and a hint of fresh jasminetea. The initial fruit is balanced by an elegant texture and an overall softness that isachieved through lees stirring, which also helps in balancing the high acidity. Yum.What a pleasure it has been making this wine from such an incredible single vineyardsite.
Capable of a vast array of styles, Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, refreshing variety that equally reflects both terroir and varietal character. Though it can vary depending on where it is grown, a couple of commonalities always exist—namely, zesty acidity and intense aromatics. This variety is of French provenance. Somm Secret—Along with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc is a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. That green bell pepper aroma that all three varieties share is no coincidence—it comes from a high concentration of pyrazines (herbaceous aromatic compounds) inherent to each member of the family.
One of the highest growing appellations in California as well as the smallest, Pine Mountain incidentally extends into both Sonoma and Mendocino counties. Its vineyards range from 1,600 to about 3,000 feet in elevation at the top of Pine Mountain.
