Winemaker Notes

Introduced with notes of dark plum, brambleberry and green peppercorn on the nose, our 2016 Pinot Noir is round with a lengthy palate. Rich avors of dark raspberry, nutmeg and cocoa bean culminate with a creamy finish, making this an easy-drinking and delightful Pinot Noir.

James Suckling

A pretty tannic pinot noir with dried-strawberry and floral aromas and flavors. Medium body and a firm mouth feel. Needs some time to soften. Better after 2022. Screw cap.

Calmere, California
The Peju sisters, Lisa and Ariana, moved to the Napa Valley when they were ages six and three. Their parents Tony and Herta (H.B) Peju purchased 30 acres of vineyard in Rutherford that is now home to the iconic PEJU Winery. Lisa and Ariana joined the company and are helping leading the direction of PEJU and Calmére Estate Winery. “In 2016 our family purchased 100 acres in Carneros and a state-of-the-art winery. We have spent two years developing a brand that represents our vision and captures the spirit of this unique property. This cool-climate region is well-known for making world-class Burgundian varietals. The property offers stunning vistas of the San Pablo Bay and the protected wetlands. It’s a peaceful and less discovered area offering up the boundless beauty of nature. It beckons and rewards the curious with wide-open spaces and impeccably made Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The name Calmére comes from the French words for calm (calme) and sea (mer). The name captures the spirit of this marine-in?uenced area that offers one of the longest grape growing seasons in the world. A place where grapes take their time to achieve full-ripeness and enjoy plenty of relaxing hang time. Our winery offers a serene location and stunning views of the bay –and wines that are just as stunning.”

As early as the 1970s Carneros became known as a source of terrific Pinot Noir, and was one of the first California regions to gain such a reputation. The combination of sunny days, cooling fog and thin clay soils are tailor-made for the variety. Another factor in Pinot Noir’s prominent place here is vintners’ willingness to experiment widely. The history of the grape in Carneros is marked by continuous research into clonal variations, viticultural techniques and site selection. Careful evaluation over time has revealed a signature flavor profile as well. Complex aromas and flavors of cherry, red berry, spice, earth and cola appear time and again in Carneros Pinot Noir. To this day the appellation remains one of California’s standard bearers for the variety.
