Winemaker Notes

This vintage opens with a bright citrus snap and savory edge, led by notes of white pepper and subtle North African spice. Layers of jasmine, lime, and tropical fruit bring both lift and intrigue. Imagine squeezing fresh lime over ripe papaya. That signature burst of ripe grapefruit, affectionately dubbed “Squirt” for its nod to the classic soda, remains front and center, giving the wine its unmistakable zing and character.

This vintage delivers everything one loves about Edna Valley Grüner Veltliner. It is packed with spicy citrus, white pepper, and a touch of ginger, all hallmarks of the variety in Cadre's coastal climate. The palate walks the line beautifully between brightness and weight, offering salty citrus, grapefruit, and savory spice wrapped in a mineral-driven frame. It is both crisp and textural, capturing the dual nature of Grüner: fresh and lively, yet grounded and full of depth. A true reflection of what makes Edna Valley white wines so distinctive.

Subtle aromas of underripe apricot and honeydew show on the nose of this bottling. There's a tingly texture to the palate, where citrus and light grass flavors align.

Fun to say and delightfully easy to drink, Grüner Veltliner calls Austria its homeland. While some easily quaffable Grüners come in a one-liter—a convenient size—many high caliber single vineyard bottlings can benefit from cellar aging. Somm Secret—About 75% of the world’s Grüner Veltliner comes from Austria but the variety is gaining ground in other countries, namely Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and the United States.

California’s coolest wine growing area, Edna Valley excels in the production of high quality Central Coast wines like Pinot noir, Chardonnay, Rhône Blends and aromatic white wines. It has a cool Mediterranean climate and an incredibly long growing season, giving late-ripening varieties plenty of opportunity to develop great phenolic complexity.

Its northwest to southeast orientation creates a direct path for cool Pacific air and fog to penetrate the valley from the Los Osos and Morro Bay area inwards. Low hillsides of both calcareous and volcanic soils are home to much of the vineyard acreage of the Edna Valley.
