    Winemaker Notes

    The 2011 Eruption is rich and intense. The wine has aromas of dark berry, sandalwood and cocoa, giving way to flavors that are jammy, ripe and expressive. The palate is layered with supple and round tannins, making the wine both hedonistic while simultaneously elegant. The texture of this wine is perhaps its most distinguishing trait - mouth-coating with an endless finish. Be certain to have a second bottle on hand, the first won't last very long.

    Assuming you have to pair this wine with food, take advantage of the Zinfandel and Petite Sirah components which lend themselves especially well to tangy bbq pork spareribs or Penne all'Amatriciana with fresh tomatoes, capers, onions, pancetta and pecorino cheese.

    2011 Eruption Red Blend
    The western section of High Valley Appellation holds the magical lands know as High Serenity Ranch. The 2,500 acre former cattle ranch is now home to Brassfield Estate Winery & Vineyard. In 1973, Jerry Brassfield purchased the original 1,600 acres as a cattle ranch and wildlife reserve. While the cattle have gone, the wildlife still remains. Over the next three decades Mr. Brassfield continued acquiring lands. Today, the estate includes both the eastern and the western sections of High Valley as well as ownership of Round Mountain Volcano.

    In 1998, the Brassfield family realized the land’s true destiny was as a world-class wine property. As a result, Brassfield Estate Winery & Vineyard was established. With the new estate vineyards increased production, the winery has grown with additional tank & barrel storage capacity and a state-of-the-art crushing facility.

    North Coast

    Encompassing the grape-growing regions located north of San Francisco, the North Coast AVA includes six counties: Lake, Marin, Mendocino, Napa, Sonoma, and Solano. Napa and Sonoma get all of the attention, but there are a few other counties producing great wine in Northern California. Two notable examples are Mendocino and Lake County, the northernmost winegrowing regions in the state. These AVAs are very different, both from their neighbors to the south and from one another.

    Mendocino benefits from the cooling fog of the Pacific Ocean and is able to successfully grow cool-climate varieties like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling. There is a significant focus here on organic viticulture. Inland Lake County, on the other hand, is considerably warmer, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Sauvignon Blanc are the dominant varieties. Both regions are excellent sources of high-quality but affordable California wines in a wide range of styles.

    With hundreds of red grape varieties to choose from, winemakers have the freedom to create a virtually endless assortment of blended wines. In many European regions, strict laws are in place determining the set of varieties that may be used, but in the New World experimentation is permitted and encouraged. Blending can be utilized to create complex wines with many different layers of flavors and aromas, or to create more balanced wines. For example, a variety that is soft and full-bodied may be combined with one that is lighter with naturally high acidity. Sometimes small amounts of a particular variety are added to boost color or aromatics. Blending can take place before or after fermentation, with the latter, more popular option giving more control to the winemaker over the final qualities of the wine.
