Winemaker Notes

A clear ruby red color, with very light orange reflections. A net aroma in which licorice stands out at first, immediately followed by a fruity scent; the aroma makes you scent it again and again to discover different and pleasant facets. The fruity aroma magnificently prevails after a few minutes in the glass. A very enveloping, fresh and harmonious taste, with a delicate and tasty presence of wood. A long lasting taste that invites to sip it slowly again and again.

Sweet fruit with cherry, toffee, chocolate and walnut character. Asphalt, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with creamy tannins and soft, succulent finish.

The Boroli 2017 Barolo Brunella draws its fruit from the calcareous clay soils in the village of Castiglione Falletto. The wine is tart and streamlined with fruit that is slightly soft and plush but not too ripe. I am impressed by the silky nature of the tannins across these new releases from 2017, a vintage that made tannin management more of a challenge because the summer heat forced earlier ripening. Having said that, this Brunella is definitely more structured compared to the other two wines tasted from this estate.

Cherry and mint are the main flavor themes in this fresh, fluid red, which is complemented by leather, tar and sanguine notes. Tightens up by the finish, where lightly astringent tannins reign. Best from 2025 through 2046.

Aromas recalling iris, woodland berry and camphor shape the nose along with dark spice notes. On the austere, elegant palate, tightly wound, fine-grained tannins support spiced cranberry, pomegranate and licorice before closing on hints of blood orange.

Attracting the most glory, prestige and fame to the Piedmont region, Nebbiolo in all of its expressions—Barolo, Barbaresco, Roero, Ghemme and Gattinara—creates a complex wine, truly unique for its delicate qualities combined with strength and a great potential to improve over time.

But Nebbiolo isn’t all there is to red wine from Piedmont! Barbera is the most planted variety and historically most popular as a dependable, food-friendly, everyday wine.

Beyond these two, a surprising number of red varieties call Piedmont their home. Worth a try include Dolcetto for its bold concentration and aromas of spice cake. Other grapes to investigate include Freisa, Croatina, Brachetto, Grignolino and Pelaverga.
