Winemaker Notes

Located northeast of Anderson Valley this steep, historic mountain ranch was once a cherry farm. With its extreme elevation and rare Red Vine soil, the Butler Ranch is perfectly suited for the Rhône-style varietals planted there. Our 90 acres of vineyard were carefully developed from a total of 900 ranch acres, today yielding fruit with extraordinary concentration and flavor. This Biodynamic® single-vineyard expression of the unique Butler Ranch is a Rhone-style blend. Deep purple with a slight red hue, this brilliant wine leads with intense, complex aromas of spicy black fruit, cigar paper, and espresso. On the palate, muscular tannins frame a juicy mid-palate, enhancing elegant flavors of black fruit, anise, and subtle spices. The finish lingers with notions of smoke, closing on an intriguing mineral note.

Blend: 80% Syrah, 8% Mourvedre, 6% Grenache, 6% Zinfandel

Matt Toloni is the organic farmer behind Bonterra’s biodynamic program, having earned Demeter certification for the Butler Ranch in 2004. This vineyard, west of Highway 101 near Ukiah, rises from 1,700 to 2,200 feet with east- and north-facing exposures. It produced a floral syrah in 2013, which Bob Blue blended with 20 percent of other varieties, including mourvedre, grenache and zinfandel. It has the fresh scent of roses and the deep purple tones of salted plums. Tense and spicy, with a clean line in the end, this is a delicious match for salumi.

Big, tight and tannic, this is a full-fledged dinner wine that needs to pair with a nice caloric veal shank or lasagna. It's made with 80% Syrah, so the color is almost black, the aromas are spicy and smoky and the flavors feature black cherry, espresso and dark chocolate. The texture is both mouth filling and a bit astringent due to hefty tannins.

Drinking famously well now, the Butler 2013 Single Vineyard Cuvée Red Wine conjures up aromas and flavors from the southern Rhône Valley. The wine is ripe, round, and explodes with excellent berry flavors. Enjoy it with a savory pot roast. (Tasted: December 21, 2017, San Francisco, CA)

Organically farmed and masterfully crafted, Bonterra Organic Vineyards epitomizes wines that are perfectly in tune with nature. A celebration of farm-fresh flavors, the portfolio features wines coaxed from the earth by careful farming practices carried out on a dynamic network of estate and partner farms throughout California. In addition to a widely available collection of organically farmed wines that includes Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Equinox Red and Rosé, Bonterra crafts a trio of sought-after single-vineyard offerings from estate Biodynamic® vineyards in Mendocino County, and The Elysian Collection Merlot, an elevated offering from organic grapes.

Long before organic produce filled the shelves of neighborhood groceries, the dedicated team at Bonterra was committed to organic and Biodynamic® farming because they passionately believe that farms teeming with biodiversity—encompassing vines, insects and wildlife, and healthy soils—yield organic grapes leading to better wines. Whether supporting the health of honeybees with hive housing in its organic vineyards, trading tractors for sheep to maintain vineyards during the winter months, or giving back to the future of agriculture through educational outreach and shared knowledge, Bonterra strives to leave behind a legacy of thoughtful winegrowing inspired by the potential of nature itself.

A large and diverse appellation within California’s North Coast AVA, Mendocino is home to several smaller sub-regions—most notably the Anderson Valley. This scenic region, with rolling hills covered in redwood forests as well as vineyards, is one of the world’s top producers of certified organically-grown grapes. Due to wide geographical and climatic variation, a vast array of wine styles can be found here.

With bold fruit flavors and accents of sweet spice, red Rhône blends originated from France’s southern Rhône Valley. Grenache, supported by Syrah and Mourvèdre typically form the base of the blend, while Carignan, Cinsault and Counoise often come in to play. With some creative interpretation, Rhône blends have also become popular in Priorat, Washington, Australia and California.

Tasting Notes for Rhône Blends

A Rhône blend is a dry, red wine and will vary according to its individual components, as each variety brings something different to the glass. Grenache is the lightest in color but contributes plenty of ripe red fruit and a plush texture. Syrah supplies dark fruit flavors, along with savory, spicy and earthy notes. Mourvèdre is responsible for a floral perfume and earthy flavor as well as structure and a healthy dose of color. New World examples tend to be fruit-forward in style, while those from the Old World will often have more earth, structure and herbal components on top of ripe red and blue fruit.

Perfect Food Pairings for Rhône Blends

Rhône Blends work with a wide variety of meat-based dishes, playing equally well with beef, pork, lamb or game. Braised beef cheeks, grilled steak or sausages, roasted pork and squab are all fine pairings.

Sommelier Secrets for Rhône Blends

Some regions like to put their own local spin on the red Rhône blend—for example, in Australia’s Barossa Valley, Shiraz is commonly blended with Cabernet Sauvignon to add structure, tannin and a long finish. Grenache-based blends from Priorat often include Carignan (known locally as Cariñena) and Syrah, but also international varieties like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In California, anything goes, and it is not uncommon to see Petite Sirah make an appearance.
