Winemaker Notes

Austere but intriguing with its aromatic range with predominating notes of earth, licorice and spices. It unfolds with dynamism and liveliness on the palate, well-integrated oak and succulent tannins.

WS 95
Wine Spectator
The polished texture masks depth and muscle in this powerful red, which shows blackberry, anise, tar and mineral flavors, with spicy and floral highlights. Firm tannins and fresh acidity lend good balance. Expressive, in an austere way. Drink now through 2027. Highly Recommended.
RP 94
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2012 San Roman is produced with the fruit of their older vines out of their 96 hectares of vineyards in Toro. They have reduced the amount of the new oak here. The aromas are very mineral of red clay, iron, a mixture of plums, black and red cherries and again something earthy, elegant and complex, developing meaty notes with time. The palate is medium to full-bodied, fresher than 2011, with very fine tannins and very good acidity. This is a superb version of San Roman. This is one of the few wines from Toro that actually improves with time in bottle. 93,000 bottles were filled in March 2015.

The wines San Roman are deep and mineral which unite power and elegance, with civilized tannins and a dense texture, defined flavours of black fruit. Made to grow in the bottle and the processes of stabilization have been minimized to guarantee the maximum respect to the grape and the terroir.

Spanish red wine is known for being bold, heady, rustic and age-worthy, Spain is truly a one-of-a-kind wine-producing nation. A great majority of the country is hot, arid and drought-ridden, and since irrigation has only been recently introduced and (controversially) accepted, viticulture has sustained—and flourished—only through a great understanding of Spain’s particular conditions. Large spacing between vines allows each enough resources to survive and as a result, the country has the most acreage under vine compared to any other country, but is usually third in production.

Of the Spanish red wines, the most planted and respected grape variety is Tempranillo, the star of Spain’s Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions. Priorat specializes in bold red blends, Jumilla has gained global recognition for its single varietal Monastrell and Utiel-Requena has garnered recent attention for its reds made of Bobal.
