I love the aromas of orange peel, rose petals and sour cherries. Light- to medium-bodied with crunchy fruit and a crisp finish. Tangy. From hillside vineyards around Florence. 100% Sangiovese.

Originally, Casamatta was a high production wine hitting around half a million bottles per vintage, but in recent years it has been massively dialled down to just 30,000 bottles in order to focus on quality. Slightly creamy and silky, the 2023 features some orange peel and coffee notes alongside crunchy cherry and fresh herbs. Emergy, sapidity and succulence are in abundance here. Delicious!

The Bibi Graetz 2023 Casamatta Poderi di Fiesole is all Sangiovese, with sweetness and some ripeness that reminds me of strawberry cobbler. You also get blue flower and scorched earth. The wine remains primary and fresh and offers a soft texture enhanced by more raspberry and cherry to close. This is a larger production of 20,000 bottles.

Legendary in Italy for its Renaissance art and striking landscape, Tuscany is also home to many of the country’s best red wines. Sangiovese reigns supreme here, as either the single varietal, or a dominant player, in almost all of Tuscany’s best.

A remarkable Chianti, named for its region of origin, will have a bright acidity, supple tannins and plenty of cherry fruit character. From the hills and valleys surrounding the medieval village of Montalcino, come the distinguished and age-worthy wines based on Brunello (Sangiovese). Earning global acclaim since the 1970s, the Tuscan Blends are composed solely of international grape varieties or a mix of international and Sangiovese. The wine called Vine Nobile di Montepulciano, composed of Prognolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and is recognized both for finesse and power.
