Winemaker Notes

Our La Serenne typically expresses the “wild” side of Syrah, and 2013 was no exception.Wild Blueberry, Damson plums, purple snap dragons, and lilacs are all present. While its common for La Serenne to be closed down aromatically and brooding at this age, in 2013 the wine shows more generous flavors, and a refined texture already.Of our 3 single site Syrah’s, look for Boushey to offer the most pleasure early on.

RP 94
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The estate's Yakima Valley Syrah, the 2013 Syrah La Serenne spent 11 months in barrel before being bottled last November. Schedule to be released this fall, it has intense, yet fresh and lively notes of violets, spring flowers, cracked pepper, iron and sweet black and blue fruits. Full-bodied, pretty, lively and nicely focused, give it a year or two and enjoy bottles through 2028.
WE 92
Wine Enthusiast
The aromas of dark fruit, mineral, smoked meat, coffee and spice are brooding, not yet fully revealing their charms. Elegant yet penetrating, the fruit and savory flavors coat the palate from end to end with supple-feeling fruit flavors and a lengthy finish.
W&S 91
Wine & Spirits
From cool sites, including Red Willow, the state’s first syrah planting, this is all about density, with plenty of oak over flavors of cassis and plum. The wood drives this wine’s texture, rendering it sleek and suave, its dark cherry core accented by smoke and a firm acid structure. Cellar this.
WS 90
Wine Spectator
Broad and peppery, with black and green peppercorn nuances to the blackberry and currant flavors, finishing with presence and persistence. Drink now through 2021.

Yakima Valley Wine

Columbia Valley, Washington

As the first recognized wine-growing region in the Pacific Northwest, Yakima Valley is centrally located within Washington’s vast Columbia Valley. The region also includes Washington’s oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vines, Otis Vineyard, planted in 1957, and Harrison Hill Vineyard, planted in 1963. Yakima Valley contains three smaller sub-regions: Rattlesnake Hills, Red Mountain, and Snipes Mountain and is ideal for both red and white wine production. In fact, Yakima Valley is Washington’s most diverse region, boasting more than 40 different grape varieties over about one hundred miles.

The cooler parts of the valley are home to almost half of the Chardonnay and Riesling produced in the state! Both are made in a wide range of styles depending on the conditions of the vineyard site.

But its warmer locations yield a large proportion of Washington’s best Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The finest Yakima Valley reds are jam-packed full of red cherry, currant, raspberry or blackberry fruit, as well as cocoa, herb, spice and savory notes, and exhibit a supple texture, great body, focus and length.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”
