Winemaker Notes

Laurie Hook chose to use a combination of whole-berry and whole-cluster (carbonic) fermentations to accentuate the forward fruit aromas and flavors. Gentle punching down of the caps preserved the Pinot's brightness and extracted color, aromas and flavors without compromising the varietal's silky texture. After pressing, the wine was quickly put into seasoned small Burgundian oak barrels (32 percent new) and aged for ten months. The wine has a dark ruby-garnet color with cherry, strawberry, sweet orange rind, old rose and spice aromas that lead into a lush-fruit mouth of sweet red cherries, sweet spice and silky tannins.

As California's longest continuously operating winery, Beringer has been defining Napa Valley winemaking since it was founded by Jacob and Frederick Beringer in 1876. By continuing that pioneering spirit, Beringer established many 'firsts' as leaders in the wine industry. They were one of the first gravity fed facilities and among the first to operate using hand dug caves and cellars. Beringer were the first to give public tours in 1934, starting a Napa Valley hospitality tradition. They are the first and only winery to have both a red and a white wine named #1 Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator Magazine. Today, they proudly celebrate and remain true to their pioneering legacy.

Internationally recognized for gorgeous, pure fruit combined with great elegance, California Pinot noir thrives among the state’s cooler, coastal zones. Characterized by eclectic flavors and aromas of strawberry, black cherry, plum and potpourri with notes of forest floor, mushroom or black tea, the best California Pinot noir boast a supple texture and good acidity, giving them the ability to improve with age.

Credited with the beginning of Pinot noir’s glory in California, two growers, Joe Rochioli and Joseph Swan in the late 1960s independently planted Pinot noir vineyards in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County. Today Sonoma County remains the leading producer of Pinot noir in the state, and Pinot noir is the leading red grape in the county, achieving its highest potential, in the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast.

Other coastal appellations where Pinot noir flourishes include Carneros, Anderson Valley and most of the Central Coast.
