Winemaker Notes

The 2014 Le Pre du Col is black cherry in color and is incredibly vibrant with smooth, velvety tannins. It has intoxicating and heady aromas of mushroom, beef broth, warm freshly turned earth; followed by blueberries, black cherries and an umami savory element framed with toasted spices. The tell-tale cinnamon red hot candies are present this year as well. This wine is medium bodied with a meaty, savory profile; it has a solid core of blueberries and bramble berries (which surround the vineyard). Farmed using the Bio-dynamic method, keeping low yields and harvesting for acidity, Le Pre du Col is a very balanced wine capable of immediate pleasure and long term aging. As well, this is one of our more intriguing wines to pair with food as it is quite diverse, being able to handle red meats, poultry, mushrooms, cheeses and more.

Professional Ratings

  • 94
Expressive, rich and complex, layering blueberry, cherry and plum flavors with savory spice and cedar notes. Fine, powdery tannins lift the long finish. Best from 2018 through 2024.
  • 93
Aromas of stones, tar and bark with dark fruit follow through to a full body, firm and chewy tannins and a tangy undertone. Shows form and tension. Better in 2019.
  • 92
Pale to medium ruby-purple colored, the 2014 Pinot Noir le Pre du Col Vineyard has pretty rose hip tea and garrigue notes with underlying cranberry, Bing cherry, bay leaves and damp earth notes. Medium-bodied and finely crafted in the mouth, it has a lovely frame of very fine tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and earthy.

Bergstrom Wines is a family-owned and operated artisan producer of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay which was started in 1999 by Dr. John and Karen Bergstrom, with the help of their son Josh Bergstrom and his wife Caroline. Josh is general manager, vineyard manager and winemaker and pulls his expertise from his education in Burgundy, France and his 14 years experience making wines in Oregon's Northern Willamette Valley. Bergstrom focuses on hand-crafting small lots of wines from their fice estate vineyards carefully chosen from fice of Oregon's six wine-growing appellations. All estate acreage is farmed biodynamically and all wines express the wonderful diversity of Oregon's many great terroirs.

Bergström Wines consists of five estate vineyards totaling 84 acres that span across four of the Willamette Valley’s best appellations: The Bergström Vineyard, Silice Vineyard, Winery Block, Gregory Ranch and Le Pré du Col. Each estate vineyard is farmed without the use of harsh chemicals, systemic or fertilizers, and the winery produces approximately 10,000 cases of ultra-premium and extremely sought-after wine each year, including two Chardonnays and nine different Pinot Noirs.

Home of some of the planet’s most amazingly elegant and expressive Pinot noir, the Willamette Valley is a pastoral, mixed landscape of green, bucolic rolling hills, dramatic forestlands and small, independent, friendly wine growers. As a leader in environmental stewardship, the valley has some of the nation’s most protective land use policies, with two-thirds of its vineyards farmed sustainably and over half, organically. While the valley claims a cool, continental climate, and is heavily influenced by the cold, moist winds of the Pacific Ocean, its warm and dry summers allow for the steady, even ripening of Pinot noir.

The potential of Willamette Valley Pinot noir continues to attract the investment of serious growers and winemakers both locally and from abroad, as naturally the finished wines bring accolades from professionals and enthusiasts. With a range of styles from delicate dried cherry, raspberry and hibiscus to stronger notes of truffle, mocha, plum and spice, a fine Willamette Valley Pinot noir is a perfect expression of both character and grace.
