Winemaker Notes
100% estate grapes from our biodynamically farmed Purisima Mountain Vineyard. Individual lots were destemmed and hand sorted whole-berry for greater purity of flavor. Grapes were gently crushed and cold-soaked for 2-5 days to extract color and tasteenhancing phenolics. Fermentation took place with native yeast in open tops for a period of 5-10 days, depending on the lot. The caps were punched down by hand three times daily. - Grapes were gently basket-pressed. The wine underwent spontaneous native malolactic fermentation in-barrel to integrate fruit and oak character. Aged in 35% new French oak and 65% once and twice used French. Blackberry and boysenberry fruits, chocolate, pepper, and PMV trademark gaminess.

There’s a subtle floral streak on the nose of this bottling, with crumpled violet, lavender and lilac aromas, but also tart elderberry and white pepper. Baked boysenberry and more violet shows on the rich sip.

Leading off the Syrah releases, the 2018 Syrah Purisima Mountain Vineyard is a larger production cuvée that was all destemmed and aged 18 months in barrel. Its deep ruby color is followed by a spicy, peppery Syrah with plenty of gamey, bacon fat notes, medium to full body, a rounded, supple texture, and a great finish. Drink this classy, character-filled Syrah over the coming 4-6 years.

In 1996 Beckmen Estate Vineyards purchased Purisima Mountain Vineyard a 365-acre Estate overlooking the Santa Ynez Valley, where there are ideal soils and climate for Rhone varieties. They began planting in 1997 and have completed a total of 130 acres at this time. The high density plantings are designed to optimize different hillside exposures and elevations.
Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”
Ranging from cool and foggy in the west to warm and dry in the east, the Santa Ynez Valley is a climatically diverse growing area. The most expansive AVA within the larger Santa Barbara County region, Santa Ynez is also home to a wide variety of soil types and geographical features. The appellation is further divided into four distinct sub-AVAs—Sta. Rita Hills, Ballard Canyon, Los Olivos District and Happy Canyon—each with its own defining characteristics.
A wide selection of grapes is planted here—more than sixty different varieties, and counting. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir dominate in the chilly west, while Zinfandel, Rhône blends, and Bordeaux blends rule the arid east. Syrah is successful at both ends of the valley, with a lean and peppery, Old-World sensibility closer to the coast and lush berry fruit further inland.
