Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The 2013 Regan Vineyards Reserve Pinot Noir is a deep garnet color that only lightens slightly where the wine meets the edge of your glass. The 2013 growing season favored our prized Pinot Noir grapes and offered development of rich color, complex aromatics and mature tannins. The nose is multidimensional; dark and red fruits mingle well with toasted oak notes from the Hungarian and French oak barrels used in the aging process. The fruit aromas are full of plums, blueberries and black cherry cola. These aromas develop and show more spice, vanilla perfume, a hint of earth and layers of oak as the wine opens up. The palate is bright with nice acidity, red fruit flavors, and a clean, long finish. Oak notes are secondary on the palate and come into focus on the end of the finish. The tannins are full but do not overpower the fruit flavors or finish. Drink now and for the next 5 years.

Food pairings include: grilled lamb chops, chicken cordon bleu, and mushroom paella.

Professional Ratings

  • 93
There is a dense floral power on the nose of this wine from a vineyard near Watsonville, with suggestions of concentrated violets, cinnamon, sandalwood, cedar and beet juice. The palate is more sanguine, with raspberry-pomegranate-cranberry juice, black slate, smoked meat and garden herbs, showing tons of length on the finish.

The Founders...

At the turn of the century, brothers Phillip and John Bargetto emigrated from Piedmont, Italy and later established Bargetto winery in 1933. They brought with them years of Italian wine-making history. Wanting to highlight the distinct quality of their mountain-grown wine, Phillip and John decided to label their first wine with the designation "Select Mountain Vineyard" to showcase where the grapes were grown.

The Next Generation...

The Bargetto Family winemaking heritage continued with John's son, Lawrence, who during the 1960's and 1970's introduced modern technology such as stainless steel fermentation and added new Santa Cruz Mountains varietals such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. He also instituted the Chaucer's line.

Today...

Today, the third generation of Bargetto's direct the operation of the winery, which stands as the oldest California winery producing Santa Cruz Mountains wines. We have continued our pioneering spirit with the establishment of a new Santa Cruz Mountains Vineyard in Corralitos, California (Santa Cruz County), where we have planted Chardonnay, Merlot and Pinot Noir. In keeping with our family heritage, we plan to experiment with the northern Italian varieties.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

A rugged and topographically diverse cool-climate appellation with a rich history, the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA stretches from Half Moon Bay, just south of San Francisco, to the northern border of Monterey County. Elevations range from 800 feet to upwards of 3,000 and microclimates vary substantially depending on which side of the mountains the vineyards lie; cool ocean winds and fog play an important role here. This can be a challenging region in which to grow grapes, but it is well worth the effort. Santa Cruz Mountains wines are noted for balanced acidity levels, often showing great aging potential. Wine has been made here since the 1800s, most notably from the legendary Ridge Vineyards, whose Monte Bello vineyard garners international admiration.

Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are the stars of this region, while Merlot and Zinfandel also perform quite well. Organic and sustainable vineyard practices are becoming increasingly common.
