    Winemaker Notes

The Banrock Station Shiraz exhibits lifted aromas of raspberry and sweet plum with hints of spice supported by vanilla oak. On the front palate sweet raspberry and dark berry fruits are present. Medium grainy tannins are evident, adding structure; however this red wine remains soft. The mid palate is rich with fruit sweetness, vanillin oak and spice complexity, ultimately finishing dry and soft.

    Banrock Station, Australia
    Banrock Station Winery Image
Banrock Station lies at the junction of Banrock Creek and the Murray River near the Town of Kingston-on-Murray in South Australia’s Riverland. The property includes extensive floodplains and wetlands with surrounding Mallee woodlands. For more than 100 years the property had been extensively used for grazing sheep and cattle. But now, following some passionate conservation work by Banrock Station and environment groups like Wetland Care Australia, the wetlands and woodlands are being carefully rejuvenated.

Though Syrah originated in the Rhône Valley of France, Australia is home to the oldest Syrah (called Shiraz here) vines on the planet. Found in Australia’s Barossa Valley, where phylloxera has never threated viticulture, these ancient vines are between 140 to 175 years old!

Having brought fame and merit to the country’s wine scene since the early 1950s, namely via the debut of Penfolds Grange, today Syrah (Shiraz) claims rank as the most widely planted grape in Australia. In fact, the amount of land dedicated to Shiraz in Australia is now almost equivalent to what it is in France. Australian Shiraz has its own personality with flavors and aromas of intense blackberry, fruitcake, menthol, tobacco leaf and umami. Conveniently one can find great Australian Shiraz at a variety of price points but the very best will be dense, gloriously complex and capable of long aging.
