Winemaker Notes

In creating our 2012 Pinot Noir Cuvee, we had an embarrassment of riches to consider. Every sector of the Ramondo Vineyard performed wonderfully, the adjacent Hurst Vineyard again provided excellent fruit, and a tiny hillside site called the Plenty Vineyard was an exciting addition to our roster of components. Sculpting a wine from such exceptional material is a pleasure, hardly a chore. Bottled in late August after 11 months spent in (40% new) 400 Liter Kadar puncheons, the wine is gracefully moving from a reticent expression of red fruits and subtle earth notes, to a racy, supple yet vivid expression of Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir elegance. That it opens up so persistently with air is an indication of the depth of character that the Summer campaign provided the grapes. We think its the best Cuve yet.

The Sonoma Coast AVA is large in area but, not counting overlapping regions like Russian River Valley, only has a few thousand acres of grapevines—and it’s no wonder. Much of the region is rugged and not easily accessible. Its proximity to the Pacific Ocean’s fog and cool breezes limits the varieties that can be cultivated, but it proves to be an ideal environment for high quality Pinot Noir.

Since fog is a frequent fact of life here, as are heavy marine layers that sometimes bring rain, the best vineyards are wisely planted above the fog line, on picturesque ridges that capture enough sun to provide even ripening. That, with the overnight drop in temperature that reliably preserves acidity, results in fine expressions of Pinot Noir that often receive tremendous critic and consumer praise alike, and are often in high demand.
