August West Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2014 Front Label
August West Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2014 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

2014 gave us one of the earliest harvests on record in many areas, but in our two Russian River vineyards, Graham and Keefer, it turned out to be a fairly normal vintage. The crops were healthy and came in around three tons per acre in both locations, which are only about a mile apart on the map. The limited water holding capacity of the gold ridge sandy loam was just enough to get us through this third consecutive year of the drought. The 2014 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir is very similar to our popular 2012 RRV. There are ripe berry and cherry flavors surrounded by a fair amount of impressive French oak, all framed by the perfect balance of acidity. It's going to be hard to resist drinking this right away, but the patient will be rewarded as this should be at its best from 2016 to 2021.

While the Russian River Valley is a large appellation with multiple climate zones and soil types, it is best known for cool-climate varieties, with Pinot Noir as the most celebrated. The grapes benefit from a reliable late afternoon flow of Pacific Ocean fog through the Petaluma Gap and along the Russian River Valley that ensures slow and steady ripening and the preservation of grape acidity. Today many of California’s most highly regarded Pinot Noir vineyards are in the Russian River Valley, along with its sub-appellation, Green Valley.

Historically Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs had bright red fruit and delicate earthy, mineral notes. But changes in viticultural and winemaking practices have led to stylistic changes in some of the region’s wines. Adjustments to canopy management, among other techniques, have resulted in riper fruit and bolder wines as well. These show flavors of black cherry, blackberry, cola, spice and darker, loamy earth tones, accenting traditional Pinot Noir notes of strawberry, raspberry and light cherry.
