Winemaker Notes

A wine with a well-defined and structured backbone that contains angular shapes which denote power. It presents itself with cautious speech in a submissive and silent way when first entering the mouth, and the strength of its blended tannins and its powerful balance are appreciable in the mid-palate.

Aromas of flowers, hot stone and blackberry follow through to a medium to full body, superb density and balance. Precise wine that shows beautiful focus. Powerful suppleness.

I tasted the 2014 Valdeginés in the context of the 2015 vintage and following the sensations I got from the unbottled wine some 16 months ago. This Tempranillo is from organically farmed vines 35 to 40 years old. It fermented in open-top oak vats for 10 to 12 days, with two daily pigéages and one soft remontage after a 24- to 48-hour cold soak. The élevage was 12 months and malolactic was also in barrique. This always had more elegance and minerality than La Poza—the two vineyards are next to each other, Valdeginés with the morning sun and La Poza getting the afternoon sun. It's very fine and elegant, a vineyard that keeps the elegance in more powerful years.

This red has density and focus. Black cherry, licorice, smoke and mineral flavors mingle over firm tannins, kept lively by juicy acidity. Energetic. Drink now through 2026.

Hailed as the star red variety in Spain’s most celebrated wine region, Tempranillo from Rioja, or simply labeled, “Rioja,” produces elegant wines with complex notes of red and black fruit, crushed rock, leather, toast and tobacco, whose best examples are fully capable of decades of improvement in the cellar.

Rioja wines are typically a blend of fruit from its three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental, although specific sub-region (zonas), village (municipios) and vineyard (viñedo singular) wines can now be labeled. Rioja Alta and Alavesa, at the highest elevations, are considered to be the source of the brightest, most elegant fruit, while grapes from the warmer and drier, Rioja Oriental, produce wines with deep color, great body and richness.
