Winemaker Notes

Although the second Cabernet of the estate, the 2002 Altagrácia is a serious wine with superb, complex aromas of cherry, leather, dusty potpourri and spice. The flavors of deep red fruit, crème de cassis and chocolate are densely packed into the opaque, concentrated wine, finishing with ripe juicy tannins and a long mineral finish.

Blend: 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 14% Petit Verdot, 14% Merlot

Everything is about quality, as evidenced by Araujo's second wine, the 2002 Altagracia. A selection of 650 cases that is about two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and equal parts (about 14% each) Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc, this is one heck of a second wine. A beautifully fragrant nose of cedar wood, flowers, pepper, and spice box along with the telltale red and black fruit soars from the glass. On a much quicker evolutionary track than the Eisele Estate Cabernet, it is supple-textured as well as loaded with fruit and complexity.

Since 1971, some of California's most ageworthy and intensely-flavored Cabernet Sauvignons have been made from grapes grown at the Eisele Vineyard, located on a benchland near the northern end of Napa Valley, just east of Calistoga. Protected by the Palisades Mountains to the north and cooled by westerly breezes from the Chalk Hill Gap, this 38-acre vineyard is planted on warm cobbly soils that produce a low-yielding crop of exceptionally concentrated fruit. Bart and Daphne Araujo acquired the Eisele Vineyard in 1990, and committed to producing only wines of the highest caliber and distinction. Araujo Estate produces 4 wines each vintage: Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard, Altagracia, Syrah Eisele Vineyard and Sauvignon Blanc Eisele Vineyard.

Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
