Winemaker Notes

The 2017 Oyster Ridge exemplifies Paso Robles’ growing renown as an elite region for Cabernet Sauvignon. The aroma profile presents a captivating intermingling of red fruits, blueberry and black currant with accents of mint, forest floor and toasted oak. An extravagantly deep palate cascades with luxurious layers of blackberry, boysenberry, black olive, chocolate, tobacco and cedar, all underpinned by hints of eucalyptus and baking spice. A plush, seamless texture exhibits a sleek sense of minerality, while firm, chewy tannins add a powerful touch to a seemingly endless finish.

Blend: Cabernet Sauvignon 80%, Petit Verdot 10%, Malbec 5%, Cabernet Franc 4%, Merlot 1%

Tasting Panel
Calcium-rich soils and white oyster fossils from ancient sea beds proliferate in the vineyard that produces this special cuvée; a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, and smaller portions of Malbec, Cab Franc, and Merlot, the 2017 vintage shines. Exemplary aromatics of violets, chocolate, and dates fill the air, and on the palate, an explosion of plum and blackberry is reined in by slate and dusty, firm tannins. Its generous mouthfeel, bold personality, and persistent fruity-floral perfume prove its world-class status.Aged 23 months in 95% French and 5% American oak barrels.

Wine Enthusiast

Aromas of black plum, sandalwood, coffee, tea and smoked teriyaki show on the savory nose of this blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 5% Malbec, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Merlot. The palate shows meatier tones of smoked beef, hoisin sauce and cracked pepper, with a caramelized finish.

COMMENTARY: The 2017 Ancient Peaks Oyster Ridge Red Blend is dense and attractive with excellent balance and style. TASTING NOTES: This wine brings a basketful of ripe boysenberries and blackberries in its aromas and flavors. Pair it with a spit-roasted, rosemary, and garlic-infused leg of lamb. Ancient Peaks, California
Ancient Peaks Winery Video

We are a family-owned winery specializing in estate-grown wines from Margarita Vineyard, the southernmost vineyard in the Paso Robles appellation on California’s Central Coast.

Just look at a map of Paso Robles wineries and at the very southern tip you will find our Vineyard. Here, amid the rugged Santa Lucia mountain range just 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean, Margarita Vineyard stands alone as the only vineyard in its vicinity, and thus the only vineyard to benefit from the extraordinary growing conditions of the area. Margarita Vineyard resides in the historic Santa Margarita Ranch, which was first planted to vines by Franciscan missionaries in 1774.

Ancient Peaks and Margarita Vineyard are owned by three longtime local winegrowing families—the Filipponis, Rossis and Wittstroms—who are actively involved in the daily operations of the vineyard and winery. Ancient Peaks wines are crafted under the guidance of Mike Sinor, a local winemaking veteran and one of the highest-rated winemakers on the Central Coast.

Ancient Peaks implements numerous sustainable viticultural practices to ensure natural quality in their wines while protecting the rich, native environment surrounding the Margarita Vineyard. Their practices have earned SIP (Sustainability in Practice) Certification for Margarita Vineyard, the leading standard for viticultural sustainability.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.
