Winemaker Notes

The 2021 Alkoomi Shiraz offers aromas of lifted violets, floral notes, black pepper and licorice. On the palate, black pepper, olive tapenade, licorice with silky tannin profile and deep crimson with purple hues.

The 2021 Shiraz is co-fermented with Viognier, and it matured in French oak (20% new). Shiraz really is one of the driving forces behind the success of Frankland River, and here, with this lick of Viognier, the tannins that define Shiraz in this region are both tamed and amplified. It offers violet, apricot blossom, white tea, red apple skins, black cherry (the winemaker is Andrew Cherry—wonder about the power of suggestion), rhubarb, black pepper, raspberry, blackberry and blood plum.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”
