Winemaker Notes

The vineyard “Colonnello” is about 40-45 years old and, to maintain it, the vines are replanted from time to time. The main variety of Nebbiolo is Michet and its rootstock is 420 A.

James Suckling

The luster of new oak shines bright here, as do the very bright and assertively ripe cherries and red plums, as well as orange zest. The tannins are a highlight with a very fluid and fleshy core of red-fruit flavor, building to a tight and long finish. This is regal Barolo. Try from 2023.

Wine Spectator
Alluring aromas of black currant, cherry, licorice and mint are set against a backdrop of vanilla and toasty oak notes in this red. Ripe cherry and plum flavors ply the middle as this plays out on the long, fruit- and spice-filled aftertaste. Best from 2023 through 2043.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Of these four Barolos from Poderi Aldo Conterno, the 2015 Barolo Bussia Colonnello shows the most focused precision. This wine offers a very fine and detailed bouquet that is distinguished by linear fruit, spice and mineral. Those aromas feel elongated and extended, both in terms of their volume and length. This impression is especially strong in a warm vintage like 2015, which brings intense and richly concentrated fruit to the table. This wine is extremely elegant and generous. Rating: 94+

Decanter
In contrast to Conterno's Romirasco and Cicala bottlings, south-facing Colonnello delivers slightly more forward and accessible wines. Rose aromas dominate the ripe and piquant nose. It's broad and generous in the mouth, with bold, assertive tannins. It's a harmonious style that doesn't show exceptional acidity but is nonetheless long and stylish.

Aldo Conterno's family has been producing and ageing the great Piedmontese wines for more than five generations. Today the winery, which is situated in Località Bussia Soprana at Monforte d'Alba, still vinifies grapes that come exclusively from its own vineyards in the hills around Alba, in the heart of the Barolo production zone. Our vineyards have a southerly/ south-westerly exposure for the 80%, whereas their altitude is approximatively 480 metres above sea-level. The soil is formed by some strata of more or less compact grey-brown sand, alternated with white and bluish calcareous marls. Rational cultivation techniques, controlled must fermentation, and traditional system of vinification and ageing combine to produce great wines of fine quality.

The center of the production of the world’s most exclusive and age-worthy red wines made from Nebbiolo, the Barolo region includes five core townships: La Morra, Monforte d’Alba, Serralunga d’Alba, Castiglione Falletto and the Barolo village itself, as well as a few outlying villages. The landscape of Barolo, characterized by prominent and castle-topped hills, is full of history and romance centered on the Nebbiolo grape. Its wines, with the signature “tar and roses” aromas, have a deceptively light garnet color but full presence on the palate and plenty of tannins and acidity. In a well-made Barolo, one can expect to find complexity and good evolution with notes of, for example, strawberry, cherry, plum, leather, truffle, anise, fresh and dried herbs, tobacco and violets.

There are two predominant soil types here, which distinguish Barolo from the lesser surrounding areas. Compact and fertile Tortonian sandy marls define the vineyards farthest west and at higher elevations. Typically the Barolo wines coming from this side, from La Morra and Barolo, can be approachable relatively early on in their evolution and represent the “feminine” side of Barolo, often closer in style to Barbaresco with elegant perfume and fresh fruit.

On the eastern side of the region, Helvetian soils of compressed sandstone and chalks are less fertile, producing wines with intense body, power and structured tannins. This more “masculine” style comes from Monforte d’Alba and Serralunga d’Alba. The township of Castiglione Falletto covers a spine with both soils types.

The best Barolo wines need 10-15 years before they are ready to drink, and can further age for several decades.

Responsible for some of the most elegant and age-worthy wines in the world, Nebbiolo, named for the ubiquitous autumnal fog (called nebbia in Italian), is the star variety of northern Italy’s Piedmont region. Grown throughout the area, as well as in the neighboring Valle d’Aosta and Valtellina, it reaches its highest potential in the Piedmontese villages of Barolo, Barbaresco and Roero. Outside of Italy, growers are still very much in the experimentation stage but some success has been achieved in parts of California. Somm Secret—If you’re new to Nebbiolo, start with a charming, wallet-friendly, early-drinking Langhe Nebbiolo or Nebbiolo d'Alba.
