Winemaker Notes

This is a youthful pale pink Vin Gris. Lively aromas of strawberry, pear and tangerine on the nose. Spectacular citrus and stone fruit expressions bring a soft attack, turning to zest, on the mid palate. A point of bitterness on the back of the palate pushes through to the finish of cola, cherry and lemon.

Pairs well with oysters and caviar.

COMMENTARY: How rosé wines are about the site? The 2018 Aerena by Blackbird Vineyards Rosé Wine combines 135-year-old Carignan and Mourvèdre vines that fourth-generation farmer Tom de Barba farms organically. TASTING NOTES: This rosé is real wine. Its racy aromas and flavors of dried strawberries and savory spices should pair nicely with lightly-grilled chicken thighs accented with red pepper flakes. (Tasted: July 8, 2019, San Francisco, CA)

Whether it’s playful and fun or savory and serious, most rosé today is not your grandmother’s White Zinfandel, though that category remains strong. Pink wine has recently become quite trendy, and this time around it’s commonly quite dry. Since the pigment in red wines comes from keeping fermenting juice in contact with the grape skins for an extended period, it follows that a pink wine can be made using just a brief period of skin contact—usually just a couple of days. The resulting color depends on grape variety and winemaking style, ranging from pale salmon to deep magenta.
