Winemaker Notes

Bright and silky, our 2009 Pinot Noir Carneros shows off red Bing cherry and Burgundy plum aromas, with hints of red rose and sweet spice. Smooth, fine-grained tannins support the elegant, red-fruit flavors through the lingering, vanilla-nuanced finish. Vibrant acidity nicely balances this medium-bodied wine, making it an excellent pairing with salmon as well as with pork, poultry and red meats.

Acacia, California
Acacia Winery Image

Acacia takes its name from the lone Acacia tree that once stood on this Los Carneros vineyard. The tree stands tall against the cool winds from San Francisco Bay signaling the chilly conditions that give this region one of the longest growing seasons around. Cool temperatures, dense clay soils and extended hangtime on the vine all combine to yield Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes of rare power and complexity. Gentle handcrafting brings out the full expression of this special terroir, for wines with layered varietal character over silky texture.

As early as the 1970s Carneros became known as a source of terrific Pinot Noir, and was one of the first California regions to gain such a reputation. The combination of sunny days, cooling fog and thin clay soils are tailor-made for the variety. Another factor in Pinot Noir’s prominent place here is vintners’ willingness to experiment widely. The history of the grape in Carneros is marked by continuous research into clonal variations, viticultural techniques and site selection. Careful evaluation over time has revealed a signature flavor profile as well. Complex aromas and flavors of cherry, red berry, spice, earth and cola appear time and again in Carneros Pinot Noir. To this day the appellation remains one of California’s standard bearers for the variety.
