Winemaker Notes

Deep aromatics of cherry liqueur, cassis, licorice, and smoked meats complement a huge palate of dark fruits, pepper, spice, and floral notes.

COMMENTARY: I am often amazed at the difference in Petite Sirah. While generally extracted, many of them are powerful yet simple. The 2015 Aaron Petite Sirah rises above the rest. TASTING NOTES: This wine is packed and persistent, yet stays balanced and refined. Its stylish aromas and flavors of black fruit and oak wrap beautifully on the palate and into the finish. Pair it with braised meat stews. (Tasted: April 29, 2019, San Francisco, CA)

The inky colored 2015 Petite Sirah offers classic sweet black and plum fruits as well as some smoky, barbecue notes in its full-bodied, layered, powerful style. With 12% Syrah in the blend and brought up in 55% new barrels, it stays beautifully balanced and is a joy to drink.

Aaron Wines, California
Aaron began in 2002, inspired by a desire to produce powerful, age-worthy wines from the rugged hillsides of westside Paso Robles. Seeking to create wines that veered from the norm, we chose to focus our efforts around a variety we adored, yet had no international benchmark — Petite Sirah.

Paso Robles has made a name for itself as a source of supple, powerful, fruit-driven wines. But with eleven smaller sub-AVAs, there is actually quite a bit of diversity to be found in this inland portion of California’s Central Coast.

Just east over the Santa Lucia Mountains from the chilly Pacific Ocean, lie the coolest in the region: Adelaida, Templeton Gap and (Paso Robles) Willow Creek Districts, as well as York Mountain AVA and Santa Margarita Ranch. These all experience more ocean fog, wind and precipitation compared to the rest of the Paso sub-appellations. The San Miguel, (Paso Robles) Estrella, (Paso Robles) Geneso, (Paso Robles) Highlands, El Pomar and Creston Districts, along with San Juan Creek, are the hotter, more western appellations of the greater Paso Robles AVA.

This is mostly red wine country, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel standing out as the star performers. Other popular varieties include Merlot, Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Grenache and Rhône blends, both red and white. There is a fairly uniform tendency here towards wines that are unapologetically bold and opulently fruit-driven, albeit with a surprising amount of acidity thanks to the region’s chilly nighttime temperatures.
