Angela Osborn gets just three tons of grenache from Besson Vineyard, planted in 1910. The wine’s old-vine expression is forthright: It’s there in the color, the dusty red of cinnamon powder in the sun, and in aromas that mingle cherry blossoms with tar; it’s also palpable in the ripe, velvety cherry flavors. The texture is a marvel, seamless and elegant, and the wine feels complete—a feeling that got only more profound after the bottle was open for three days.

The 2016 Grenache Besson Vineyard emerges from a site planted in 1910. What I find most fascinating about the Besson is an understated but very present sense of structure that belies the wine's ethereal personality. Lifted and gracious, with striking inner sweetness, the Besson is a super-intriguing expression of Grenache.

Brought up in 25% new French oak (which is on the high side for Angela), the 2016 Grenache Besson Vineyard has a Burgundian-style bouquet of red and black fruits, leafy herbs, underbrush, and pepper. It's silky, has a charming, incredibly balanced style, and moderate tannins, and is going to evolve gracefully.

A Tribute To Grace Wine Company is dedicated to crafting authentic expressions of Grenache. All wines are single-vineyard sourced to maintain authenticity, and remain 100% Grenache.

Angela Osborne is a New Zealand born winemaker who moved to California in 2006 with the dream of making Grenache. In the land from which she stems, the climate is too cool to ripen this sun-loving beauty. And so began her search: northern Spain, southern France, southern Australia, California...

Abundant sunshine and entrepreneurial spirit led Angela to the latter, and in 2007 she sourced her first Grenache fruit from the Santa Barbara Highlands Vineyard. Nestled high above the Pacific Ocean and 33 miles inland, this high-desert vineyard provided the perfect balance of heat and light that was sought. Angela named her label after two of her favorite things: her Grandmother Grace and her most beloved attribute. Angela's winemaking intention is to capture this spirit, and stay as close to nature as humanly possible. The trio is completed by the grape itself, which to me encapsulates grace.

A rugged and topographically diverse cool-climate appellation with a rich history, the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA stretches from Half Moon Bay, just south of San Francisco, to the northern border of Monterey County. Elevations range from 800 feet to upwards of 3,000 and microclimates vary substantially depending on which side of the mountains the vineyards lie; cool ocean winds and fog play an important role here. This can be a challenging region in which to grow grapes, but it is well worth the effort. Santa Cruz Mountains wines are noted for balanced acidity levels, often showing great aging potential. Wine has been made here since the 1800s, most notably from the legendary Ridge Vineyards, whose Monte Bello vineyard garners international admiration.

Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are the stars of this region, while Merlot and Zinfandel also perform quite well. Organic and sustainable vineyard practices are becoming increasingly common.
