A distinctive counterpoint to California Cab, this Washington rendition offers pleasantly leafy aromas and notes of dark cherry and moderately ripened berries. Structure from oak and tannins is proportional to the fruit's intensity, enabling the wine to pair successfully with anything from roast chicken to lamb chops.

Blackcurrant, tobacco and tar on the nose, with some spice box and coffee. It’s full-bodied, mouthfilling and chewy with ripe and broad tannins.

The 2022 Double Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon is a well-made and excellent wine. This wine shows aromas and flavors of dried spices, early summer blackberries, and shading of oak. Try it with thyme-accented grilled lamb chops. (Tasted: July 24, 2024, San Francisco, CA)

Double Canyon Horse Heaven Hills Winery Image

With the goal of creating authentic estate-grown wines, Double Canyon was established in the heart of Horse Heaven Hills in 2007. Double Canyon's focus is crafting Cabernet Sauvignon that expresses the individuality of their namesake vineyard and captures the distinct character of Washington State’s best appellations. Double Canyon’s new state-of-the-art winery opened its doors for the 2017 harvest.

Their Story There are few places in the world capable of producing truly remarkable wine. Despite all they’ve learned of viticulture over the centuries, it is still largely the whim of nature and fate of geological events that unfolded long ago that dictate where this rare and special terroir is located. Double Canyon's job then is to seek out parcels of land that present an opportunity to cultivate great wines. In 2007, they did just that, when they founded Double Canyon. From that moment, the focus has been crafting exceptional Washington Cabernet Sauvignon from pedigreed vineyard sites, anchored by their namesake Double Canyon Vineyard in Horse Heaven Hills. For the past 50 years, Horse Heaven Hills has produced some of the most revered fruit in Washington. Their 90-acre Double Canyon Vineyard, named for two ravines that run through the property, was selected for its desirable location and proximity to the Columbia River. Influenced by volcanic activity, ancient glacial deposits, desert soils, and a persistent wind that blows off the river, Double Canyon wines capture the distinctive character of this renowned appellation.

The Winery Double Canyon opened the doors to its new winemaking facility in West Richland, Washington just in time for harvest 2017. When it came to building a home for their wines, they took a studied, philosophical approach. In pursuit of making great Cabernet Sauvignon, they brought together a small team of experts with more than 175 years of combined winemaking and production experience to draw on this depth of knowledge and collaborate on the design of a best-in-class facility. Technologically advanced and designed for top-level craftsmanship, the new Double Canyon winery allows them to control every aspect of winemaking. Armed with new tools to automate processes such as temperature-control and pumps-overs, they'll be able to achieve an even higher level of precision, efficiency and quality.

Washington produces so many exciting wines, and that definitely includes Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. With over 10,000 acres under vine, Cabernet Sauvignon is now the most widely-grown varietal in the state. Terrific examples hail from sub-appellations like Red Mountain, Wahluke Slope, Horse Heaven Hills and Walla Walla Valley. One of the fascinations of these Columbia Valley Cabs is that they so often seem to have one foot in the New World and one in the Old. Representing the former are characteristics like the ripe, forward fruit that results from long sunny days during the growing season (up to two hours longer than in much of California). Old World similarities include an undeniable brightness from acidity, as well as notes of herbs, graphite and a dusty, sometimes gravelly minerality.

Whether you’re looking for a budget bottle for everyday enjoyment, or a stellar, world-class wine with tremendous aging potential, Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon wines can deliver the goods! Among the many fine options are bottles from Columbia Crest, Chateau Ste. Michelle, L’ecole #41, Quilceda Creek and Leonetti.
