Winemaker Notes

Gnarly Head 1924 Double Black Red Wine Blend delivers rich aromas of blackberry, mocha, caramel and vanilla, setting the stage for concentrated core flavors of plum, dark chocolate, toasted marshmallow and allspice.

Jet black in the glass, pair this full-bodied wine with equally bold dishes: charbroiled bacon cheeseburgers, spicy sausage gumbo or pork baby back ribs slathered in barbecue sauce.

This smooth, almost silky, wine shows a beautiful black-fruit tone, with a full-bodied frame and a light touch of tannins. It has plenty of black cherry and blackberry flavors accented by baking spices.

1924, California
1924 The Taste of American Spirit Winery Image

1924 – The heart of the prohibition era and wine’s darkest hour when it was deemed illegal. It was also the year our winery first planted vineyards in California and farmed grapes that were sold to friends and neighbors. Story goes some of these grapes might have been used to make wine. For those that dared to toil in the black-market of winemaking, full-bodied red wines were the wine of choice and a crowd favorite at speakeasies across the country. Crafted from the finest fruit grown in select Lodi vineyards, our 1924 wines deliver dark, rich flavors in a style reminiscent of the prohibition era.

A major force on the global playing field, California is the world’s fourth largest wine-producing region on the planet and the majority of land under vine here is devoted to red varieties, covering nearly double the vineyard acreage of whites.

While the state’s incredibly diverse terrain and microclimates allow for countless red wine styles, the one factor unifying all California red wine is the abundance of sunshine and a long, consistent growing season, which leads to well-developed and fully ripened fruit.

The most famous region today, of course, is the acclaimed Napa Valley, where Cabernet Sauvignon reigns as king.

Sonoma County, nestled between Napa Valley and the Pacific Ocean, claims great variability in geography and microclimates. Here world-class Pinot Noir is possible from Sonoma’s cooler sites while old, gnarly Zinfandel vines survived Prohibition.

The Central Coast, Lodi and the Sierra Foothills also excel in the production of Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and remain active frontiers for newer varieties, namely Rhône and Spanish.

The cool Anderson Valley in California’s North Coast region is a fantastic source of Pinot noir.
