This Merlot was pumped over or punched down by hand two times per day in small stainless steel tanks. After pressing, settling, and racking the various lots were moved to French barrels for aging and maturation. In late spring of 2013, the wine was assembled and bottled then laid down in our cellars for additional development. The wine shows beautifully with elegant high toned fruit, very nice acidity and overall proportion. The Weinbau Vineyard has produced a complex flavor profile of subtle cherry, spice and coffee while the Woodward Canyon property offers more earth. Notes of fruit, spiced oak, leather and earth are in the aroma. Rich black cherry fruit and fully mature tannins make this wine generous and balanced enough for current drinking, yet with the complexity and structure to age well for six to eight years.

A big step up, the 2011 Merlot Columbia Valley is a delicious effort that gives up beautiful creme de cassis, black raspberry, licorice, spice and assorted wild herbs to go with a medium to full-bodied, layered and decadent style on the palate. Aged 19 months in new French oak, enjoy this beautifully textured, seamless and nicely structured effort over the coming 10 to 12 years.

Woodward Canyon Winery, named for the canyon Rick’s family farmed and where the Estate Vineyard is now located, was established in 1981 by Rick Small and his wife, Darcey Fugman-Small. Woodward Canyon was the second winery in the Walla Walla Valley and the Smalls were instrumental in the process of obtaining federal approval of the Walla Walla Valley appellation.
The winery has consistently produced premium, age-worthy, award-winning Cabernet Sauvignons and Merlots as well as Chardonnays. From the outset, Rick determined that quality would take precedence over quantity.
Consequently, Woodward Canyon has remained small. Woodward Canyon is located in Lowden in the Walla Walla Valley appellation. The tasting room is a restored 1870's farmhouse.
Woodward Canyon is a founding member of the Walla Walla Valley Wine Alliance and VINEA, the Walla Walla Valley Winegrowers' Sustainable Trust.
