Winemaker Notes
The Wittmann Estate Riesling Trocken is harvested by hand from estate-owned vineyards around the village of Westhofen. It is fermented with native yeasts and matured in large, neutral oak casks. The wine shows a deep, stony aroma, with an elegant structure and bright citrus juice that leads to a lingering, piquant finish.

What a beauty this is for - theoretically - an entry level wine! Such an original nose in which ripe quince and mirabelle are married to bergamot and delicate baking spice aromas. So much structure on the concentrated medium-bodied palate. Very long, powerful finish that’s so spicy and chalky. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification.

Sourced in Westhofen and a small plot in Hangen-Weisheim above the Morstein, which ripeness later and delivers higher acidity, the 2022 Riesling trocken Estate was mostly fermented in large oak vats and partly in stainless steel. Bottled in April this year, this is a stringent, saline and crispy as well grippy dry Riesling with delicate juiciness and stimulating purity that delivers salinity and tension. It's a fabulous Riesling bottled with just 12% stated alcohol.
Riesling possesses a remarkable ability to reflect the character of wherever it is grown while still maintaining its identity. A regal variety of incredible purity and precision, this versatile grape can be just as enjoyable dry or sweet, young or old, still or sparkling and can age longer than nearly any other white variety. Somm Secret—Given how difficult it is to discern the level of sweetness in a Riesling from the label, here are some clues to find the dry ones. First, look for the world “trocken.” (“Halbtrocken” or “feinherb” mean off-dry.) Also a higher abv usually indicates a drier Riesling.
