Winemaker Notes

Fresh red fruit aromas of ripe Bing cherry, strawberry and pomegranate are accented by floral hibiscus and brambly, herbal undertones. Bright red fruit aromas carry onto the palate where a broad mouthfeel is supported by pleasant tannins and juicy acidity. Aged in neutral oak, this Pinot Noir highlights the fruit forward nature of the 2014 vintage.

COMMENTARY: A new brand for me to ponder, but I already think the Wine By Joe offers some of the best values in the marketplace. TASTING NOTES: The lively 2014 Wine By Joe Pinot Noir is delightfully fresh and bright in its aroma and on the palate. This wine looks like a salmon-pairing kind of wine. (Tasted: March 1, 2018, San Francisco, CA)

Wine By Joe Winery Video

Yes, there really is a Joe! Joe Dobbes is the man behind your bottle of Wine By Joe. As the sole owner and winemaker of Wine By Joe, Dobbes is a busy guy. As he says, "Passion fuels endless energy." Joe has been making wine in Oregon for over twenty years and his passion increases with each vintage.

Driven to excellence in his art, Joe Dobbes is the consummate winemaker. Raised in a small town in the north Willamette Valley and educated in Ashland, Joe is a true Oregonian and is dedicated to Oregon wines. Yet his calling began outside Oregon, in Germany and France, where Joe spent years learning the art and science of winemaking. He apprenticed at Wiengut Erbhof Tesch, in the German Nahe region and at Domaine G. Roumier and Domaine Comtes Lafon in the Burgundy region, France, with winemasters Christophe Roumier and Dominque Lafon.

While the Willamette Valley and Pinot Noir are a like a fairy tale match made in heaven, most of Oregon is in fact, a glorious source of Pinot noir. Claiming over half of its total area under vine, Pinot noir also thrives in Southern Oregon’s Umpqua and Rogue Valleys where sedimentary and volcanic soils dominate hillside vineyards and cool temperatures create the perfect environment for Pinot noir. Also, Oregon’s Columbia Gorge is becoming increasingly popular for Pinot noir production. What sets Oregon Pinot noir apart from the Pinot of other regions, both New and Old World, is its innate combination of grace with both power and restraint.
