Most of the east coast of Australia was plagued by unusual cold and wet weather over the 2011 growing season. Beechworth’s free-draining soils were its saviour, however, and the 2011 Giaconda Chardonnay was a strong release from the outset. Gentle and pure aromas of delicate ripe white florals, hay, almond meal, subtle menthol, enduring smoky reduction and a glimmer of green tea leaf. There’s excellent restraint to this wine, with lovely purity, finesse and youthfulness at 13 years of age. The palate is remarkably fresh, too, with trademark textural impact, restrained power, and complexity. Gunsmoke, peach, straw and bergamot tea glide through the mouth, with a glimmer of earth and mushroom in support. Excellent length with firm, pithy acidity framing the finish.

Wente Vineyards Family Owned and Certified Sustainable Winery Video

Founded in 1883, Wente Vineyards is the country’s longest continuously family-owned and operated winery. Today, the winery maintains its leadership role in California winegrowing under the ownership and management of the fourth and fifth generations of the Wente family. Blending traditional and innovative winemaking practices, the winery draws from its sustainably-farmed vineyards to create an outstanding portfolio of wines. The family owns and operates vineyards in two world-class regions of the Central Coast of California - Livermore Valley and Arroyo Seco, Monterey. Located just east of San Francisco in the historic Livermore Valley, Wente Vineyards is recognized as one of California’s premier wine country destinations, featuring wine tasting, food and wine experiences, and championship golf.

In 1912, 2nd Generation Ernest Wente persuaded his father and founder, C.H. Wente, to import Chardonnay cuttings from a well-known vine nursery, F. Richter Nursery in Montpellier, France, to the Livermore Valley. Ernest hand-picked vines that showed the best health and pronounced flavors, grafted the two together and propagated those characteristics forward. Ultimately creating what is known as the ‘Wente Clone.’ Today, over 75% of all California Chardonnay stems from the Wente Clone and the Wente Family property.

California’s most praised white wine, Chardonnay is also the state’s most planted white grape variety. Diverse terrain and microclimates allow for an incredible range of wine styles.

Chardonnay planted in the cooler, coastal zones takes on bright characteristics like lemon zest, key lime, green apple and wet flint. For this style, look to the chilly Sonoma Coast, Carneros, Santa Cruz Mountains, Santa Lucia Highlands and Edna Valley.

The inland zones of California’s coast, such as the Russian River, Sonoma, Napa and Livermore Valleys maintain a more Goldilocks-esque climate where both styles go. Early picking retains acidity and creates a leaner style but leaving the grapes to hang creates an approachable Chardonnay, balancing richness and finesse.

Chardonnay also plays a major part in the sparkling wine production of the Anderson Valley and Carneros.
