James Suckling
A subtle and complex dry riesling with a good concentration of herbal and slate character, plus a spot-on balance of peachy and citrus fruit with fine tannins. Fascinating touch of grapefruit pith at the long, mineral finish. Drink or hold. Depending on the market, this may be with screw-cap or cork closure.

Schneider’s 2020 Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Trocken is bright, pure, ripe and intense on the elegant and aromatic nose that intertwines ripe fruit with dusty slate aromas. Crystalline, very fine and lush on the palate, this is a persistently salty Hermannshöhle with great finesse and mineral tension. The acidity is remarkably fine and perfectly interwoven with the mineral structure of this gorgeous dry but round Riesling from one of the Nahe’s finest vineyards. The finish is very long, saline and piquant. Fabulous.
Riesling possesses a remarkable ability to reflect the character of wherever it is grown while still maintaining its identity. A regal variety of incredible purity and precision, this versatile grape can be just as enjoyable dry or sweet, young or old, still or sparkling and can age longer than nearly any other white variety. Somm Secret—Given how difficult it is to discern the level of sweetness in a Riesling from the label, here are some clues to find the dry ones. First, look for the world “trocken.” (“Halbtrocken” or “feinherb” mean off-dry.) Also a higher abv usually indicates a drier Riesling.
