The 2022 Forster Jesuitengarten Riesling GG VDP.Grosse Lage opens with a generous, intense and complex bouquet with tropical fruit aromas intertwined with well-integrated oak and saline notes. Generous, dense and round on the palate, this is a powerful, very rich and intense, quite massive yet tightly structured and rather opulent but still refined Riesling with fine and still slightly astringent tannins that will integrate with further bottle age. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork.

The 2022 Riesling Forster Jesuitengarten Grosses Gewächs was drawn from used tonneau. The nose is still closed, but there is a hint of herbal tisane despite the essentially shy nature of this sample. An aromatic apple juiciness is as ripe as it is tart. The palate is juicy and shows an immense balance between that rounded orchard fruit and this sprightly fillip of freshness. The 2022 is smooth, concentrated, lasting and elegant. (Bone-dry)

Riesling possesses a remarkable ability to reflect the character of wherever it is grown while still maintaining its identity. A regal variety of incredible purity and precision, this versatile grape can be just as enjoyable dry or sweet, young or old, still or sparkling and can age longer than nearly any other white variety. Somm Secret—Given how difficult it is to discern the level of sweetness in a Riesling from the label, here are some clues to find the dry ones. First, look for the world “trocken.” (“Halbtrocken” or “feinherb” mean off-dry.) Also a higher abv usually indicates a drier Riesling.

This sunny and relatively dry region served for many years as a German tourist mecca and was associated with low cost, cheerful wines. But since the 1980s, it has gained a reputation as one of Germany’s more innovative regions, which has led to increased international demand.
