    Winemaker Notes

The 2015 vintage of our Viña Eguia Tempranillo is a cherry red color with strong intensity. It brings a bold red fruit aroma to the nose along with scents of vanilla, coconut, licorice and balsamic notes. The palate is fresh, vibrant and elegant with a pleasant, lingering finish.

This wine goes very well with all types of meats, especially baked pork and grilled beef. It is ideal with Spanish tapas and cured meats and cheese as well as pizza.

Vina Eguia The Winery Winery Image

The Vina Eguia winery and vineyards were established in 1973 in Elciego and purchased by Bodegas

Muriel in 2010. Elciego is a historic village in the Rioja Alavesa, which borders the Spanish “Basque”

region, and the language spoken there often includes Basque words, such as “Eguia” which means

“truth”. The brand is symbolized by an open hand over the label, which is in the shape of an open book –

analogous to putting one’s hand on a bible to swear to the truth of what one is saying.

Hailed as the star red variety in Spain’s most celebrated wine region, Tempranillo from Rioja, or simply labeled, “Rioja,” produces elegant wines with complex notes of red and black fruit, crushed rock, leather, toast and tobacco, whose best examples are fully capable of decades of improvement in the cellar.

Rioja wines are typically a blend of fruit from its three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental, although specific sub-region (zonas), village (municipios) and vineyard (viñedo singular) wines can now be labeled. Rioja Alta and Alavesa, at the highest elevations, are considered to be the source of the brightest, most elegant fruit, while grapes from the warmer and drier, Rioja Oriental, produce wines with deep color, great body and richness.
