Winemaker Notes

Margaret River Chardonnay has developed a strong reputation and following throughout the world. Vasse Felix has developed a more modern style of Chardonnay, embracing the fruit, some solids in the juice and the natural yeast from the vineyard. We do not stimulate malo-lactic fermentation which in turn results in greater preservation of the natural acids from the vineyard. The fruit is picked earlier to also help preserve the natural acids and keep the alcohol lower, resulting in a tighter, more refreshing style of Chardonnay. Additional complexities are gained from barrel fermentation and lees' stirring which also helps to build texture.

The 2009 Vasse Felix Chardonnay is pale straw in colour with a bright green hue. It has complex, fragrant aromas with lovely biscuit characters and hints of lemon and subtle vanilla. The oak is beautifully integrated, sitting perfectly with the perfume of fine Margaret River Chardonnay. The wine arrives vibrant and fresh on the palate, with a beautiful silky texture and hints of citrus, stone fruit and biscuit stretching fine and long through the palate. The wine finishes with fresh acidity and subtle hints of spicy oak. The 2010 release is long, textured and a beautiful example of Margaret River Chardonnay. This release is ready to be enjoyed now and will continue to develop further complexity and richness if cellared carefully over the next 3 - 5 years.

The 2009 Chardonnay has moderately intense aromas of green guava, fresh pineapple, peach blossom and butterscotch with a subtle leesy/fresh baked bread character. Very crisp and tight-knit in the mouth this medium bodied wine has a great concentration of tropical fruit and cream flavors, silken texture and a long finish. Drink it from 2012 to 2016+.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

Home to some of Australia’s most elegant and long-lived red and white wines, Margaret River is situated in the farthest reaches of Western Australia. Relatively warm and dry, the region is cooled by breezes from the Indian Ocean. Margaret River takes some inspiration from Bordeaux, producing top-quality Cabernet Sauvignons and Bordeaux Blends with firm structure, mouthwatering acidity, balanced alcohol and notes of herbs and spice. For white wines, refreshing blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon as well as complex, age-worthy Chardonnays are regional specialties.
