Winemaker Notes

Deep and dark – that’s Teroldego (teh-RAWL-deh-go) in a nutshell. Blackberries. Black raspberries. Black figs and a sprinkle of black pepper. You get the picture. In the glass, it’s the deepest purple around, and it’ll stain your teeth almost as fast as it will win over your palate. If you inhale deeply, you’ll get a whiff of lavender and, maybe, a bit of thyme to follow. Take a sip. Rich dark fruit flavors finish with nice hints of minerality that aren’t too intense. And there’s plenty of tannin to give it a smooth and supple mouthfeel.

Unique to the Trentino region of NE Italy, Teroldego produces a deeply purple-hued wine with an assertive black fruit character and intriguing aromatics. The best quality Teroldego comes from the Campo Rotaliano, a sandy and gravelly plain between the tall mountains of the area. Somm Secret—Dating back to the 15th century in Rotaliano, Teroldego has created a well-connected anthology for itself. As a parent to Lagrein, a variety native to nearby Alto Adige, it is also closely related to Syrah.

The vineyards just inland from the Sacramento River Delta, along the deep banks of the Sacramento River, comprise the Clarksburg AVA. The River Delta channels in cold air and fog from the Pacific Ocean creating a cooling effect in this area. Warm summer days quickly change to chilly evenings and make a great environment for grape growing. While a range of grape varieties grow here, Chenin blanc stands out the most, distinguishing itself in the appellation.

The Clarksburg Wine Growers and Vintners Association, made up of nearly 50 grower members and over a dozen wineries, has been working since the late 1980s to promote the high quality wine of its region.
