Winemaker Notes

Planted at about 1600 feet atop Atlas Peak on the south-eastern side of Napa Valley, Mead was originally planted in the 1880s. Our head-trained block is primarily from the 1970s; right in thefog, this is generally the last of our Napa vineyards to ripen each year. This is the second-to-last vintage of Turley’s Mead, so if this is a favorite, you may want to stock up. Of all the spring wines we tasted, the ’17 Mead is the most dramatically expressive right offthe bat: high-toned, wild red fruits like fraise du bois or a raspberry patch come to mind, along with cracked black pepper and fragrant herbs. Yields were miniscule, with less than a ton to the acre, and this is reflected in the typically dense mountain tannins.

The 2017 Zinfandel Mead Ranch has a deep ruby-purple color and very spicy, Syrah-like nose of cracked black pepper, smoked meats, fried herbs and herbal hints with incredibly dense, lush blue and black fruits at the core. Medium to full-bodied with savory, spicy dark fruits in the mouth, it's framed by firm, ripe tannins and just enough freshness to lift the very long, dense, savory finish. 850 cases produced. 94+

Unapologetically bold, spice-driven and jammy, Zinfandel has secured its title as the darling of California vintners by adapting well to the state's diverse microclimates and landscapes. Born in Croatia, it later made its way to southern Italy where it was named Primitivo. Fortunately, the imperial nursery of Vienna catalogued specimens of the vine, and it later made its way to New England in 1829. Parading the true American spirit, Zinfandel found a new home in California during the Gold Rush of 1849. Somm Secret—California's ancient vines of Zinfandel are those that survived the neglect of Prohibition; today these vines produce the most concentrated, ethereal and complex examples.

Just northeast of Napa city, Atlas Peak boasts some of Napa Valley’s highest elevation vineyards. Here the intense sunlight coupled with cool, nighttime temperatures produce grapes that are perfectly ripe, balanced and concentrated. The appellation is rich in volcanic soils and excels in the production of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
